Have you ever been experienced? That’s what the Jimi Hendrix Experience asked an unsuspecting world when they dropped their debut album in 1967 at the brink of the new dawn of the hippie-power era. The world didn’t know what hit ‘em. The new sound from this trio of musicians was deep—powerful, loud, brash, electrifying, terrifying, bombastic . . . epochal. The 2009 RAVENSWOOD Barricia Zinfandel is a similar experience. Man, this shit hits you smack in the face. It is intense as a motherfucker. And it’s freakin’ good. From vines planted in the 1880s, you know this is deep: black berries, black pepper, black smoke and black leather at nearly 15% alcohol content. It’s also silky and sexy, a Foxey Lady. Drink enough of this stuff and you might be thrown into a Purple Haze and feeling—to use Jimi’s own words—“not necessarily stoned but . . . beautiful.” –J.M.
