The current crop of young Aussie wineries continues to impress. RAÏDIS ESTATE hails from Coonawarra in South Australia. If you’ve never heard of the Coonawarra region before, one of the best regions in Australia for growing Cabernet grapes, that’s something to get excited about. Because right now, this is a time in Australian wine where, if you haven’t heard of the area from whence it came, you best give it a try—it’s likely you won’t be disappointed. Raïdis’ 2013 Billy Cabernet Sauvignon is just wonderful. So enjoyable, friendly, approachable a Cab. It’s all about the freshness, vitality and purity of fruit … just delicious. What charms you on the nose—notes of currants, boysenberry preserves and mocha—charms you on the palate. This is a bright and cheery Cab, lighter body, completely integrated and with no rough edges, well balanced, and finishing on uplifting acidity of red cherry. The wine is named after the winery’s billy goat mascot, and really, there’s absolutely nothing pretentious about the winery or the wine. Amiable and good-natured, this is Cabernet Sauvignon to be shared in the best of times. –J.M.
