Great Wine: Pierre Amadieu Vinsobres

By

Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy. That was what The Who named their first album of greatest hits back in 1971, but they could have been describing the 2010 Les Piallats Vinsobres from PIERRE AMADIEU. From the furthest north of the Southern Rhone and raised in high altitude, this Vinsobres [van-soh-breh] is made up of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, and there’s something electric in the energy of this dark purple wine with notes of cherry, blackberry and blood that you can see for miles and miles. It’s powerful and rebellious, like the song “My Generation,” but also serious and sensitive, like the song “Behind Blue Eyes.” The key to The Who’s magic was the counterpoint between Pete Townshend’s intellect and emotion contained in his songwriting & lyrics and Keith Moon’s wild energy and mad pounding on the drums—the result was classic noise and timeless music, which is this wine.  –J.M.
