I love bright and fresh Italian white wines from the Abruzzo region of Central Italy (somewhere between the ankle and the calf of the “boot”). Chances are you’ve overlooked this part of the world, or take it for granted. Maybe because Pinot Grigio up north in Alto Adige and Friuli, like pretty cheerleaders, always win the popularity contest. Or, you neglect white Italians altogether and only fall head over heels for moody but sexy Barolo or dark-skinned, hot and temperamental Brunello. Wines like this sharp, assertive and witty 2009 LA VALENTINA Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, mind you, are the kind of love interest that are just fun to be around and great to talk to. Not eye-catching on the outside, perhaps, but pure and true on the inside. You tell everybody “we’re just friends,” but, really, you’re in love and you don’t know it. –J.M.
