Great Wine: Foley Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills

By

I believe FOLEY ESTATES is one of the great makers of white wines in America. The winery’s entry level 2008 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay is a real beauty. I’ve tasted at least six other higher-priced Foley chards, so don’t let the “entry level” label fool you—it’s world class. A crowd-pleaser, so rich, so juicy and flavorful, and so deftly balanced, it’s a testament to the region of Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara and the world-class quality of its vines, though relatively still young, as well as the unique coastal weather patterns and winemaker’s technique that shape the brilliant California-Burgundy wines we can achieve here in our own little Cote de Beaune. -J.M.
