The 2011 vintage brought out the Film Noir in the Pinot Noir. Cool, serene and classy like a classic black & white 40s detective movie, the FAILLA Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir emerges within an atmosphere of shadows and fog. The color red here is a dusty red, and the tears it leaves in the wineglass drip slowly in its glycerin thickness. Like Humphrey Bogart in John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon, the wine’s demeanor is steely detachment dressed in a custom-tailored suit. The dark fruit is in perfect balance and harmony with acidity and lightness—creating a stylistic contrast in black and white—cool yet warm, sharp but mellow, brooding and mysterious yet alluring and enthralling. Like Bogie said, this is “the stuff that dreams are made of.” –J.M.
