Region: Ribera del Duero, Spain Ready to Drink: Immediately upon release
Like a young, brash Pablo Picasso who’s ready to change the world but doesn’t quite know how yet, the 2016 Resalso Tempranillo from one of the great Spanish wine artists, EMILIO MORO, is young and sassy and full of confidence… but doesn’t quite know how to be a great Ribera del Duero yet.
That being said, the Resalso is everything a great, Spanish table wine should be—young, approachable, distinctive, medium- to full-bodied, rich and bold. It packs a flavorful punch of dark plum, red cherry and peppery spice, with a hint of lavender to soften things up and just the right level of acidity to balance things out. And, at less than $15, consider this your go-to Tempranillo, that greatest of Spanish grapes.
The Resalso has taken on more character over nearly a decade of vintages, and provides more than a suggestion of the immense complexity and intensity of the best Tempranillos out there. A solid entry point, and once you go through the entryway you’ll never look back. –J.M.
