A glowing midnight star on a cold winter’s night. To where would it lead if we followed it? Maybe a child in a manger . . . or a midnight sale at Best Buy? Whatever the case may be, the question’s worth pondering: What if eternal hope was a reality? Who would we be today . . . right now? What selflessness and service to others would flow out from us in return for receiving such a magnanimous gift of hope? The spirit of Christmas lies in those unanswered questions, and this is a sweet, generous and humble wine to perfectly accompany such metaphysical ponderings. The 2007 DOMAINE HUET Vouvray [voov-ray], Le Mont Demi-Sec is a pale gold like straw, bearing gifts of gentle orange, garden flowers and sweet honey. Rich, but modestly so, with a stony backbone strengthened by faith. Best enjoyed in a communion of family, good friends and neighbors. For this is a wine of mirth and good cheer for a silent night. –J.M.
