Great Beer: Brouwerij West Popfuji Pilsner

By

It’s spring time! Time to shed the winter clothes and hearty ales. With the warming weather come the crisper, lighter ales, bocks and lagers that are perfect for basking in the sunshine.  I’m kicking off my springtime with a Popfuji Pilsner at BROUWERIJ WEST in San Pedro, California. This is such a perfect beer to enjoy on a sunny day. It’s crisp, refreshing and delicious, and at 5% ABV, you can enjoy a few (responsibly, of course).

The Popfuji has a beautiful golden color with a touch of haziness and a nice foamy head. There’s also a hint of fruity aroma on the nose. The mouthfeel is CRISP—oh so crisp! The crispness flows into a slightly sweet and biscuity malt body, finishing with a dry, slightly spicy hoppy bite courtesy of the Noble hops. This pilsner has a wonderfully fresh-tasting and thirst-quenching flavor which just leaves me wanting more. And more I had, because I finished my first one pretty quickly.

There are a few bars around Los Angeles and Long Beach where you can currently find Popfuji, but the Brouwerij West brewery is THE BEST place to experience this delicious pilsner. There’s something really cool about sitting among the historical, pre-WW2 shipping warehouses in the town of San Pedro, where Brouwerij West resides, and enjoying this beer while the sun shines in your face and a nice breeze blows off of the Los Angeles harbor.  —J.A.
