FROM THE CELLAR | Great Wine: 2007 Marchesi di Barolo Barbaresco DOCG Serragrilli

By

A last, longing look exchanged between two people who share an unrequited love. One among the pair stands in the pouring rain. The other sits in an automobile as the windshield wipers move back and forth, while the spouse sits in the driver’s seat waiting for the light to change, oblivious to what has transpired between the two who once were strangers but are no longer. The 2007 MARCHESI DI BAROLO Barbaresco DOCG Serragrilli is a wine that stirs not just any kind of passion but the kind that lingers on the mind, heart and tongue for what seems an eternal length only to softly fade into memory. Alive and alluring with silky elegance and elegant structure, it’s all soft and sweet tannins all the way, with vibrant and mouthwatering flavor of red cherry and accents of rose, black tea, anise, spice and white pepper. Time serves this Nebbiolo wine well—its unsettled energy when first tasted five years ago has now given way to a sweet undercurrent that encourages honesty and vulnerability in conversation. This is, in truth, a thoroughly conversational wine best shared in intimate moments. The only question is, who is that person before you? And do they share the same emotions you possess . . . how will this night end?  –J.M.
